Sara’s 2018 Camel Training Seminar

Sara Tourtelotte, primary caretaker of the herd of camels in northern California, attended the 2018 Southwest Camel Conference and Training Seminar in Texas.  This is an annual event that was attended by over 80 people and camel experts.  Participants were from the U.S., Europe, and Australia, including the most highly regarded and well-known camel trainers.

All of the trainers demonstrated a humane approach to camel training.  I observed that they obtained some remarkable advances with the camels during the weekend.  The seminar was very useful in helping me identify the most immediate and important training that needs to be done with our camels to facilitate veterinary care.

It was extremely educational for me to observe so much camel handling and get a greater sense of risks and tolerances.  It impressed me how ‘loose’ it was in the arena, with 80+ people (including children) freely wandering among the camels as the trainings were conducted.  The experts all seemed very confident with everyone’s safety.”

I was asked about our camels by some participants, who also expressed a desire to visit the sacred herd.  I noticed that people want to be more deeply connected to what they were attracted to about the camel in the first place, this uniquely contemplative disposition.

Attending the conference was instrumental in beginning relationships with those immersed and working with camels so that we can all learn from each other in service of these beautiful creatures.”
